Mose Tolliver (1920 - 2006) was born, raised, and became famous in Montgomery, Alabama. With only a third grade education, Mose found work as a truck farmer, landscaper and eventually as maintenance man at a furniture company. Unfortunately, he suffered from a crushed ankle when a large piece of marble fell from a forklift at work. After the accident, Mose began to teach himself to paint at the urging of his former employer. His work shows his unique vision in subtle uses of color and highly stylized forms.

The work of Mose Tolliver was first brought to national attention by the Corcoran Gallery. Since then, his paintings have been displayed and purchased by many museums throughout the United States.
